Louisiana killed the last sweeps sites this august so whats even left for US players now??

There's a defensible counterargument to be fair to the states. The sweeps model genuinely was operating outside consumer protection frameworks while marketing aggressively, often to people who didn't understand they were effectively gambling. From a regulator's perspective, shutting down an unregulated dual-currency casino that dressed itself as a sweepstakes promotion is reasonable consumer protection, even if the second-order effect is offshore migration.

The honest position is that both things are true. The sweeps model deserved scrutiny AND the crackdown pushes some players somewhere worse. Regulatory decisions rarely have clean outcomes. This one certainly doesn't.
yeah but the states arent offering a legal alternative in most of these places. if La banned sweeps AND launched regulated online casino that would be consumer protection. banning sweeps while offering players nothing legal just means everyone goes offshore. thats not protection thats just moving the problem where you cant see it 🙈

commercial reality is that most of these states banning sweeps have no intention of legalising online casino. more like land based casino lobby and the tribal gaming interests in a lot of these states actively oppose online gambling because it competes with their physical properties. so the sweeps ban isn't step one of a regulation plan, it's just removing a competitor to the existing licensed land based operators. follow the money on who lobbied for these bans and it's frequently the established casino interests, not consumer advocates. i mean consumer protection framing is real but it's not the whole engine

sure that makes a lot more sense of it. its not really about protecting players its about protecting the existing casinos from a cheaper online competitor. 50y racketeering thing suddenly looks less like consumer protection and more like clearing the field

@wagerwinner it's some of both but morgan_c is right that the commercial angle is underrated. Louisiana has a significant land-based casino industry and riverboat gaming. Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, New Orleans. Those operators pay taxes and licence fees and employ people locally. A sweeps casino operating from offshore pays Louisiana nothing and competes for the same entertainment dollar. The racketeering penalty makes a lot more sense when you see it as protecting a taxed domstic industry from an untaxed foreign competitor, dressed up as consumer protection.
Both framings are true simultaneously. That's usually how gambling legislation works.

this daysi love thet i moved to the uk honestly it makes our system look almost sane by comparison. at least here you know where you stand. one regulator, one set of rules, actual complaints process even if the affordability stuff is a pain. the US thing where its legal here illegal there racketeering across the river with no federal framework sounds exhausting to actually live under as a player

agreed. uk gets a lot of stick on here and deserves some of it but at least ther'es a system. reading about people losing balances with no recourse because they were never technically customers is grim. that couldn't happen the same way here

honestly as an american i envy the uk setup right now and i never thought id say that. yeah your affordability checks are annoying but you have RIGHTS. i have a patchwork of fifty states, a collapsing sweeps sector, no legal online casino in most of the country, and a stuck balance i cant do anything about. "land of the free" gambling experience in 2026 is down from the edge

Stuck balance is what id push everyone on. if you have ANY sweeps balance in a state that hasn't banned yet, redeem it now. Oklahoma goes november 1st. If you're in Oklahoma don't wait til october to cash out.As the moment these things get close to the deadline the redemption process gets slow and then it gets gone. I learned that lesson across four states this year and it cost me every time.

cheers lads pretty useful. gonna tell my cousin that all big sites were gone from louisiana ages ago, the august just killed the last holdouts, his stuck balance on the small site is probably gone for good with no recourse, and if hes thinking of going offshore crypto to keep playing hes jumping into something with even less protection. grim summary tbh....

thara's one thing to add for your cousin tell him not to chase the stuck balance by signing up to some site promising to "recover" sweeps funds. those recovery scams are already circulating and they target exactly the people who just lost access. balance is gone. anyone promising to get it back is running a second scam on top of the first loss

yup recovery scam thing is so real mate. every time a site goes down the "i can get your money back for a fee" accounts crawl out. tell ur cousin to ignore em! money is gone, paying someone to "recover" it just makes it two losses
