Tips for Picking a Sports Betting Site in Canada

  • Think about what you want in a betting site. Consider which Canadian sports you like. Do you mostly bet on NFL or college football? Or do you prefer lots of NHL betting options? Do you use your phone or a computer to bet? Answering these questions can help you choose a Canadian sportsbook without stress.
  • Do some research. Reading our sportsbook reviews can help. It shows you the different betting options available. Also, check our list of sportsbooks to avoid. This is important, especially if you're thinking of using a sportsbook that's not on our recommended list.
  • Check the welcome bonus. Some bonuses might look good, but check the rules. If they don't match how you bet, it might be better to skip them.
  • Look at how you can get your money and how fast. It's important to know how quickly you can get your winnings. Some betting sites, like those using PayPal or Interac in Ontario, are known for fast withdrawals in Canada.

Licensing and Regulation

In different parts of Canada, like provinces and territories, there are different places where you can bet on sports. Some are run by the government, and others are from private companies. Let's see what options each place offers:

In Alberta, they recently made single-game sports betting legal. There's an online place called PlayAlberta.ca where you can bet, and it's regulated by the government. They also have Sport Select, which is in stores and run by the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC). You can do different kinds of bets there, like single-game bets and parlays.

In the future, Alberta plans to have more places for sports betting. The Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis (AGLC) will have two more companies offering sports betting in 2023-2024. This will give people more choices for where they can bet.

In British Columbia, they started allowing single-game sports betting on PlayNow.com in August 2021. People quickly bet over $25 million in just two months. PlayNow.com is run by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC), and it's a big platform where you can bet on lots of different things.

Allowing single-game betting means they could make a lot of money. The BCLC thinks it might bring in around $125-$175 million. They also picked Genius Sports Limited to provide official data starting in August 2021, showing they're serious about this betting stuff.

In Manitoba, they made it okay to bet on single games online at PlayNow.com starting in August 2021. Then, on November 1, 2021, the Sport Select from WCLC started letting people bet on single games in stores.

People in Manitoba can legally bet on single games online using PlayNow.com. It's the only online option for sports betting that's regulated by the government there. If you want to bet in person, Sport Select lets you do that at certain stores, even though there aren't many of them. The Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Corporation (MBLL) is in charge of both online and in-person betting.

New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador changed their rules to allow betting on single games, thanks to the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC).

In New Brunswick, they legalized single-game betting on August 27, 2021. The ALC looks after all the betting stuff in the province. The only way to legally bet on sports there is through a platform called Pro•Line. You can do it at stores and online on the Pro•Line Stadium website.

Newfoundland and Labrador did the same thing on the same day with the help of the ALC. They also use Pro•Line for betting, and it's available online and in stores. This lets people in these places easily bet on different kinds of games.

In the Northwest Territories, they also made it okay to bet on single games starting from November 1, 2021. The Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) quickly made changes after Canada said it was okay to bet on single games. Even though big betting names might not be there yet, things could change in the future. The Northwest Territories is a place to keep an eye on for any betting updates.

In Nova Scotia, they started letting people bet on single games on February 11, 2022, just before Super Bowl 56. The Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC) got permission to do this in Nova Scotia.

The ALC is in charge of sports betting in Nova Scotia. They provide ways for people to bet online using Pro•Line Stadium and also at stores like convenience stores, grocery stores, and gas stations.

The ALC also brought its online casino to Nova Scotia on July 21, 2022, making it even more fun for people to play games there.

In Nunavut, they started letting people do single-game sports betting with the help of the Western Canada Lottery Corporation's (WCLC) Sport Select. This is a big change for betting in Nunavut.

People in Nunavut can bet on important games like Super Bowl and Stanley Cup Final at certain stores, even though betting online entirely isn't available yet.

Ontario's betting scene has changed a lot. They made it okay to do some types of bets in 1985. Then, on August 27, 2021, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) allowed single-game betting online. After that, on April 4, 2022, they started their online gaming market.

The OLG improved Pro•Line on February 1, 2022, to make betting in stores better. Before, you could only bet on single events using the PROLINE+ platform.

Ontario opened four places where people can bet in stores on October 28, 2022. These places—Elements Casino Brantford, Great Blue Heron Casino and Hotel, Pickering Casino Resort, and Shorelines Casino Belleville—have special spots just for betting on sports, called the Great Canadian Sportsbook lounges.

In Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), they started allowing single-game sports betting. It happened because of a change in the law called Bill C-218. This made it okay for P.E.I. residents to bet on single games.

P.E.I. people who want to bet online can use a website called Pro•Line Stadium. But it's not sure if other companies will start doing betting in P.E.I.

In Quebec, they've had a betting place called Mise-o-jeu by Loto-Québec for a long time. They changed their rules because of Bill C-218, so now people can bet on single games online or in stores with Mise-o-jeu+.

In Saskatchewan, they allowed online sports betting using PlayNow.com starting from November 3, 2022. It's run by the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority, and people there can use it to bet.

Yukon lets people aged 19 and above use good sports betting apps, but they have to be from places that follow the law. There are some local government licensed sites, like those supervised by the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC). But big names like FanDuel, BetRivers, and DraftKings don't work in Yukon, even though they work in other places.

In other news from the sports betting world in Canada, we’ve seen some exciting developments! Now in 2024, Canadian sports bettors have a wide array of legal online sportsbooks and political betting sites at their disposal.

This was made possible when the Canadian Senate introduced two transformative sports betting bills back on June 21, 2023. Bill S-268, which allows Indigenous First Nations to offer retail and online sports betting on their reserves, is a significant step forward.

Moreover, Bill S-269 has been developed to create a national framework for sports betting ads, ensuring a safe and regulated environment for this burgeoning industry.

So, for all the sports enthusiasts and betting aficionados out there, these advancements have certainly added an extra layer of excitement to the game! Stay tuned for more updates in this thrilling space. 🏀⚽🏈

Hey folks, been checking out some new online casinos. These welcome bonuses are insane! 200 free spins here, 100% match there. These bonuses are sweeter than maple syrup, eh? 🍁 Anyone else loving these deals?

While the bonuses may seem attractive at first glance, it's crucial to approach them with caution. The labyrinthine terms and conditions associated with casino bonuses often obfuscate their true value. It behooves players to approach these ostensibly generous offers with a healthy dose of skepticism and due diligence.

Uhhh... yeah. What he said. I think? Anyone actually read those T&Cs? They're longer than my high school English essays!

Has anyone used Ladbrokes in Canada and had a positive experience? I've come across mixed reviews and would appreciate some firsthand insights.
