asked for ID again on a withdrawal from an account ive had since 2021

does anyone know if it applies to limits you've already got set? mine was set two years ago and i have no idea which sort it is

deposit limits today, spending limits tomorrow. same architecture either way, the only difference is who sets the number

You set this number. That's the actual distinction and it's not a small one. The Commission has been explicit that these reforms don't impose income checks or general affordability requirements. You pick your own cap based on what you know about your own finances and the operator has to honour it consistently. There's also a rule that if you ask to reduce a limit it takes effect immediately, no cooling-off period, which is the opposite of how operators used to handle it.
Whether the wider direction worries you is a separate argument. This particular measure hands you a lever rather than taking one.

looking from the outside, the thing i'd point at is that both of these landed in the same three weeks and one of them is a lever for you and the other is friction against you, and the friction is the one everybody's actually experiencing

@geordiecolin isn't angry about deposit limits. he's angry because five years of accepted deposits turned into a document request the moment he was owed money. that's the whole gap between what a rulebook says and what a queue actully feels like

bit that gets me is the sheer volume. a quarter of everything going into the commission's contact center is this one issue
that's not a handful of operators being sloppy. that's the standard way the industry has decided to do it

Warnings generally precede enforcement rather than replace it. The Commission tends to publish the expectation, then act against licensees who ignore it, and the second part takes considerably longer than anyone wants.
That's not a defense of the pace. It's how the sequence works.

mine's the same. no wording either way. that's sort of the point of the change though isn't it, if only one kind can be called a deposit limit then in three weeks the label will actually mean something

no. its on them not you! check what your limit actually says afterwards though, that's worth doing
