I went looking for the table limits last night and ended up staring at the betting grid instead, because there are two green boxes at the top of it. A zero and a double zero. Ive been playing that table on and off since about this time last year. The tile just says Roulette. Theres another one two rows down that also just says Roulette and that one has one zero.
Is that normal or have I been doing something stupid??

One extra box out of 38 is the most expensive box in the building, and I say that as someone who has been banging on about this for years and getting ignored.

Right. Two dice worth of arithmetic, no maths degree needed.

Single zero wheel. 37 pockets. A straight up number pays 35 to 1. So you win 35 once every 37 spins and lose 1 the other 36 times, which is minus 1 unit per 37 spins. That is 2.70%.

Double zero. 38 pockets. Still pays 35 to 1. Minus 2 units per 38 spins. 5.26%.

So Siouxsie has been playing a game that costs very nearly double what the table two rows below it costs, with the same word on the tile, the same payout printed on the layout and probably the same dealer.

hmm mine's single zero, which i'm relieved about and slightly annoyed that i had to go and look. a year is the bit that gets me though. nobody's hiding it exactly, it's right there on the layout, but nothing on the site is going to point at it either

guess im going to be the unpopular one here because i've played a lot of roulette in actual casinos and the double zero wheel is not a trick. its the standard wheel in america. walk into anywhere off the strip and thats what youre getting. nobody there thinks they're being conned, its just the game. the single zero tables exist and they have higher minimums because the house gives you better odds and charges you for the privilege of sitting there. so when people in here talk about a double zero wheel like its a scam, what they're actually describing is a normal american roulette table. math is public and it has been for a hundred years

Hey nobody called it a scam and I did not call it a scam. I called it twice the price.

Your version has something mine does not though, and it is the thing that makes your comparison fall over. In a building, the double zero table has a lower minimum and the single zero table has a higher one, so you are being offered a visible trade. Cheaper seat, worse odds. That is a real choice and I have no problem with it.

Siouxsie's two tables are on the same screen, both called Roulette, and I would put money on the limits being similar. Where is the trade there? What did she get for the extra 2.5%?

cuz she got an american roulette table, which some people specifically want because of the layout and the extra bets on it. and before you say nobody wants that, i do. i grew up on that wheel. the five number bet doesn't exist on a european layout and there's a whole betting pattern round the double zero that european players have never seen. you're arguing nobody should be offered the worse game. im saying i would be annoyed if it vanished

I think both of you are right, but about different things and the disagreement is about labelling rather than about roulette.

@Taekim is correct that American roulette is a legitimate game with its own following, and correct that removing it would annoy people who choose it deliberately. Nobody is entitled to have other people's preferences abolished.

@CatMatt is correct that two games with materially different costs should not share a name on the same screen with nothing distinguishing them. That is not a complaint about the game existing, it is a complaint about the tile.

I would add the detail that cuts against @Taekim slightly. The five number bet he likes is the worst bet on the American layout by a clear margin, worse than every other bet on that felt. If the extra bets are the reason to be there, the headline extra bet is the one to avoid.

i've known that about the five number bet for twenty years and i still put a chip on it sometimes. thats not a math decision

Yeah its Triple Zero, sometimes called Sands. 39 pockets, still paying 35 to 1, which works out at 7.69%.

Same sum as before. Win 35 once in 39, lose 1 the other 38 times, three units down per 39 spins.

The part that should bother people in regulated markets is that Ezugi carry one, and Ezugi is an Evolution brand. It appeared in the lineup for their newest US studio alongside EZ Baccarat.

So you can sit in a licensed US lobby and be offered a 97.30% wheel and a 92.31% wheel by the same company, in the same list, with nothing between them but the name on the tile.

hey then whats the easiest way to check without squinting at the wheel while its spinning?
Look at the betting grid, not the wheel. The zeros sit along the top of the number layout and you can count them standing still. Name usually tells you too. European or French means one. American means two. Triple Zero generally says so. It is only the ones that just say Roulette you have to open.

sounds easy enough, cheers
