contacted fraud department at commonwealth about transactions to offshore casino. investigator said he would try chargeback because online casino transactions are illegal in australia under IGA.
they are contacting payment processor with please explain. lost about $800 total over few weeks. transaction summary doesnt show casino name just payment processor.
investigator said worst that probably happens is getting blacklisted which is fine. what are chances bank actually gets money back?

interesting. which casino was it? some of them process through weird merchant codes that make chargeback easier

did you authorize the transactions yourself or was it fraud? if you made the deposits yourself not sure bank can do much even if casino is illegal

@grantwishes3 yeah i told bank rep i authorized them. he could see transactions went through as funds transfer from my account. he said he would still try to reverse them
said he has seen people get money back before in similar situations

was there 3d secure on the payments? like sms code verification? that makes big difference for chargebacks

Wait. You told the bank you authorised the transactions yourself, and they're still processing a chargeback? That's unusual.
IGA makes it offence to PROVIDE services to Australians not USE them - you didn't break any law. But chargebacks are typically for unauthorised transactions or merchant fraud, not for authorised gambling losses.

What exactly did you tell them was the issue?

@bill_collins i explained casino operates illegally in australia and shouldnt be processing australian transactions. investigator said thats valid reason to dispute with payment processor

mate did you win or lose? be honest because that matters
@LuckyLoser i actually won about $400 at same casino last month and they processed withdrawal fine. this time lost $800 though
hold on. if casino is illegal why were you using it in first place? and if you authorized transactions with 3d secure then you confirmed they were legitimate at the time
@shadow123 didnt realize it was illegal until after. plus games felt way more rigged this time compared to when i won

wait what? you won $400 and withdrew it no problems. now you lost $800 and suddenly casino is illegal and games are rigged?
damn mate you cant have it both ways

commonwealth and other banks have gambling blocks that take 24-48 hours to remove once activated. might be more useful than repeatedly filing complaints for gambling losses
